Chapped lips: soothe fast, repair for good

Tightness, flaky skin, cracks: chapped lips call for two distinct actions — immediate relief and barrier repair. Here’s how to combine them.

Why do lips chap so easily?

The skin on the lips is three to five times thinner than on the face, with no sebaceous glands to produce its own protective film, and almost no melanin to filter UV. The result: cold, wind, central heating, sun and even reflex lip-licking — which brings relief for a second, then dries as it evaporates — attack it while it is defenceless. A chapped lip is a broken barrier: water escapes, the surface cracks, and the cycle keeps itself going. The effective response layers two levels of action. Soothe and fill first: healing actives such as aloe vera speed up the repair of existing cracks. Seal next: plant waxes (candelilla, carnauba) and beeswax leave a breathable film that retains water and blocks aggressors while the barrier rebuilds. In winter or in the mountains, add the sun factor: reflected light burns melanin-free lips much faster than the skin on your face.

Frequently asked questions

Saliva brings relief for a second, then evaporates, taking the lip’s moisture with it and leaving irritating enzymes behind. It’s the classic vicious circle: the more you lick, the more they chap. Keeping a balm always within reach is the best way to break the habit.

Never: you reopen the barrier and start from scratch, sometimes with a crack. Soften them with balm; they come away on their own within a few days once the lip is rehydrated.

Yes: sun, salt, chlorine and air conditioning dry them out as much as the cold. As lips have almost no melanin, remember UV protection too during prolonged exposure.
