Splitting and brittle nails: the strengthening routine

Nails that split into layers or break at the slightest knock lack moisture and lipids. The solution is not to cover them up, but to nourish them.

Understanding nail splitting

The nail is made of layers of keratin bonded together by lipids. Hot water, detergents, harsh removers and cold dissolve this cement: the layers separate into sheets — that’s splitting — and the dried-out plate becomes brittle. Two mistakes keep the problem going: filing the layers (which exposes the next one) and piling layers of conventional polish on top (which masks without treating, and each removal with a harsh remover worsens dehydration). The right logic is that of skincare applied to the nail: restore the lipid film every day with penetrating lipids, protect before exposure — washing-up, housework, gardening — and choose a gentle acetone-free remover that removes polish without stripping the cement. As keratin renews slowly, consistency beats quantity: a small daily step beats an occasional intensive treatment.

The 3-step routine

1

Nourish

Every evening, the Regenerating wax with 10% panthenol: a one-minute massage, and the nail absorbs it overnight.

2

Protect

Before chores, a thin layer of wax as a shield; and to remove polish, the acetone-free Extra-gentle nail polish remover with lavender.

3

Strengthen

Taking over from there, the Strengthening treatment polish with AHA smooths the surface and densifies the nail plate with each application.

Frequently asked questions

Cold outdoors and heating indoors dry out keratin just as they dry out skin. The lipid film that bonds the layers of the nail becomes depleted and the layers separate — hence the importance of a daily dose of lipids in the cold season.

Cut cleanly rather than filing the surface: filing the layers exposes the next one and keeps the problem going. File only the free edge, in one direction.

Acetone-based removers also dissolve the nail’s lipids. A gentle, acetone-free remover enriched with oils removes polish while preserving the lipid cement — a real difference-maker if you wear polish regularly.

The first effects (a less rough surface, fewer micro-breaks) appear within 2 to 3 weeks; a fully renewed nail takes several months, so the routine is a long-term commitment.
