Yellowed nails: getting clear nails back
Yellow tints after nail polish, dull tips, uneven colour: yellowing is almost always a surface discolouration — and it can be treated.
Why nails turn yellow
In the vast majority of cases, a yellowed nail is a nail stained on the surface: pigments from nail polishes — especially reds and dark shades — migrate into the top layers of keratin when applied without a protective base coat. Tobacco and certain household products have the same effect. Because the nail plate is porous, the colour becomes embedded; but as the nail is constantly renewed, the tint grows out over time — provided you stop feeding it. The method: first, cleanse gently with an oil-enriched remover that dissolves pigment residues without stripping the keratin; next, smooth and even out with an AHA treatment polish whose gentle exfoliation speeds up the removal of stained layers and restores shine; finally, protect by never again applying a coloured polish without a base coat. One honest word of caution: if the discolouration is thick, localised and accompanied by thickening of the nail, it may be a fungal infection — in which case it is a matter for your pharmacist or doctor, not for a cosmetic.
The 3-step routine
Cleanse
Remove all polish with the Nail polish remover with sweet orange essential oil: it dissolves pigment residues without drying out the nail plate.
Even out
As a course of treatment, the Strengthening treatment polish with AHA: its gentle exfoliation speeds up the removal of stained layers and smooths the surface.
Maintain
In the evening, the Regenerating wax nourishes the keratin — a healthy, moisturised nail reflects light better and looks clearer.
Frequently asked questions
The discolouration grows out as the nail plate renews itself: allow a few weeks for a visible improvement, and up to several months for a fully renewed plate. The key is to stop feeding the discolouration.
These remedies abrade or acidify the surface: the immediate effect comes at the cost of weakened keratin, which then stains more easily. Gentle, gradual exfoliation is more effective and causes no damage.
The base coat creates a barrier film between the pigments and the porous keratin: it is what prevents colour from migrating. It’s the number one preventive step against yellowing.
If the yellowing is thick, limited to one or two nails, with a nail that thickens or becomes misshapen: these signs suggest a fungal infection, which calls for medical advice rather than a cosmetic.
